Have you checked Hotwire for the cheapest airline from New York to San Jose? do you need a round-trip?
My tip would be to consider also SFO, San Francisco Airport as an option to arrive in, if you are not able to find a flight into San Jose. San Jose is a much smaller airport, and if you can select 2 airports you will increase your chances. Check with Super Shuttle for a ride between airports if you select this option – super easy to transfer, only about an hour apart. Good luck!
