It depends on your budget.. but basically with the currency in Singapore at 2.5 times higher than Malaysia, and if you are to see dollar on par with the ringgit, then Malaysia would be a better deal for you.

Malaysia is also much larger than Singapore so you would have to decide where you want to go.

I would recommend the beaches of Malaysia, ie Penang, and Langkawi on the West Coast (though Penang is a city), and more idylic islands like Perhentian, on the East Coast for diving are good too.

City – stay with Kuala Lumpur. I would give the neighbouring (to Singapore) city of Johor Bahru a miss entirely (even though I was born there) as it is really a dull place to be!

Food is plentiful if you love food….

In Singapore, even at food stalls (where the locals go) you can easily pay around US.00 for a plate of say, fried noodles.

In Penang (where its a food lovers paradise), you pay for a even larger plate of noodles for US.80 on average.

You must try the Penang Road Chendol in Penang !!! Yummy. (Its a dessert).

PS – I vote for Penang cos my family’s from there.
PPS- I vote for Singapore for its cleanliness and organisation. And for expensive designer brands!

Basically everything you want to see and do , you can do in Penang as you can do in Singapore, at half the price.

And if you want to travel around Malaysia to other parts of the region, you may do so with Air Asia, the country’s most popular low cost airline.

What do you think? Answer below!

    Hi.
Well, im from singapore. Basically, singapore as we all know, is rather small in terms of its land area. so , getting from the east to the west only need half an hour by car(taxi). or an hour by our public transport known as the Mass Rapid Transport ( MRT). Therefore, minimal time is spent on transport.
just some things to note, it is better to avoid certain places which are rather popular with the tourists such as chinatown or newton food centre. they tend to charge a higher price for tourists.
any questions, you may drop me an email at yuhui1990@hotmail.com. i’ll be glad to answer them. thanks! (:

It depends on how long you plan to stay. You can actually visit both places. I have noticed that airfare seems to be cheaper into Singapore since more airlines fly there versus Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia is cheaper in terms of food as I was able to eat a lot for so little.

I think it really depends on what you want to do during your trip. Penang is nice as I went there. Nice beaches. Singapore has Sentosa Island which I heard is really nice. Unfortunately I did not have a chance to visit since it rained the whole time I was in Singapore. What I like about Singapore is how clean the country is. Also I flew Singapore Airlines so I was able to use a Singapore Stopover Holiday Pass. With it comes discounts on hotels, attractions and certain restaurants. You can also board the HopAlong bus for free and see downtown Singapore.

Both Singapore and Kuala Lumpur have good shopping. The thing with Malaysia is that there are a lot of different islands you can visit so you have to pick and choose the places you want to see. If you go to Malaysia, go to Langkawi (good beach) and Redang Islands (good place for snorkeling and scuba diving). They say it is pretty nice. Genting has some casinos and shows if you like that.
