Traveling from Michigan to New York through Canada?
Question by spartan917: Traveling from Michigan to New York through Canada?
I am moving from MI to NY and am hoping to cut through Canada to shorten the drive. My question has two parts – first off, does anyone know how exactly I make this process smooth and quick? Has anyone had any experience in making this same move? Second, I am bringing my 3 month old puppy with me. Are there any regulations on her?
PLEASE HELP!

First, the puppy. Be sure to bring a certified copy of rabies shots, the Canadian officials may ask for that. Also, your own birth certificate, passports not required.
If you’re carrying a significant amount of property along with you because you’re moving, it’s a good idea to have 3 copies of the property listed, just in case the Canadian customs officials ask.
What you plan to do is very commonly done, so it isn’t as though they aren’t accustomed to hearing it. Just be sure and answer their questions accurately, don’t have more than one carton of cigarettes, one quart of liquor and bring some evidence that show the address you’re actually moving to in NY that validates your story.
No firearms, mace, etc., that’s a biggy for them.
Gas up before getting into Canada, the price here is horrendous. Keep your gas receipts to show the US Customs when your trip began, again, just evidence to validate what you’re doing.
We have done this a few times, but not in your area.

the only problem i can see you having is with canada customs when they see that your moving they just might think your going to stay in canada instead of travelling through to new york, so if its not much out of your way go for it, tale a chance, also no problem with dog
Your dog needs to have proof of vaccinations etc. The last time I did that trip on a regular basis I was required to get a separate Canadian insurance endorsement to my US policy.
What happens is that a computer reads your license plates about 10 cars out so by the time you actually talk to customs they pretty much know who you are or are supposed to be.
Very important : Your nationality is American !!! If you tell them that you are Italian because you are of Italian descent they will ask you for an Italian passport and since you don’t have one , they can and will make your life difficult.
Make things easy for customs to access .
When I moved to Toronto for 6 months I actually had an itemized list of everything I had on board to present to Customs-they barely looked at it . Still…..
If you plan on crossing at Niagara Falls and seeing the Falls is of no importance to you ,
the crossing down river by the power station [ Portage Rd ?] will have less traffic.
Ultimatley if you make life easy for Customs they will make life easy for you,and the opposite applies too.
So fill up w/ gas in the US , remember that Canadian speed limits are posted in kph not mph and gas is sold by the liter. 1 gallon =3.8 liters
