Q&A: How much spending money should one have to travel to Los Angeles for a week?

Question by Tommy Lee: How much spending money should one have to travel to Los Angeles for a week?
I’m from Colorado, 21, and I’ve really never seen anything or been anywhere. Hell, I’ve never seen any ocean. I have the money to cover a vacation package deal to LA for a week from Orbitz (plane, car, hotel). But how much money should a single guy bring to spend in LA on food, gas, souvenirs, ect. I’m really not interested in amusement parks, I’m more into sight seeing and museums. Thanks for your opinion.

800 to 1,000 dollars should be enough.

$900-1500 should do it. Here are some suggestions for your trip.

More fun: Santa Monica Pier, Griffith Park, Beverly Hills/Rodeo Drive Shopping District, Mulholland Drive, Universal City Walk, Chinatown, Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood Walk of Fame, Hollywood Sign.

Even more fun: Sunset Strip, Museum of Tolerance, Los Angeles Farmer’s Market, Huntington Beach Pier.

Some other interesting activities: Westwood Memorial Park (where most celebrities are buried.) Hollywood Wax Museum, Anime Expo.

Sports: Staples Center, Lakers Game, Dodgers Game.

Studios: Warner Bros Studio Tour, NBC Studios, Culver Studios, CBS Studios, Paramount Studio Tour

    And the list goes on..

The LA area is huge, so the gas depends on how much of it you plan to see. It sounds like you don’t have any preconceived ideas of what to see, so you probably don’t know how far and wide you will be driving. That makes it impossible to calculate gas. Just as a guess, rentals I’ve used take about $40 to fill, and I think you will probably fill about three times in that week.

Also, the amount you need for food will depend on if you want to eat at fast foods outlets, or regular restaurants, or if you want to check out some fine dining places. I would plan for $25/day if you are doing fast food, MORE if you will be trying out other restaurants. Food at museums is more expensive than outside, but it’s so nice to relax in that environment and have lunch or a snack. You can people watch and think about what you’ve seen, or grab a beverage and plan what you want to look at in the museum.

I prefer to use guidebooks when I travel – TOP TEN is a good one, and less overwhelming than the big guide books you can find at your local book store. If you don’t purchase a guide book to plan your visit, I suggest you pick up whatever they offer at your hotel when you get to California. Most of them will have some sort of magazine which describes where to go, where to eat, etc. You can also check http://www.tripadvisor.com which gives some ideas as well.

There is so much to see in LA. I don’t have a “must see” list for LA because it really depends on YOUR preferences. I know you’re not interested in amusement parks, and I don’t blame you – they are now too crowded and wildly expensive – but Medieval Times is unique and fun:

I would like to recommend two fabulous museums. One is the Huntington near Pasadena: http://www.huntington.org/

The other is the Getty Museum near Beverly Hills:

I’ve been in museums in NYC and Europe, and The Getty is one of the most beautiful museums I have ever seen. I’m sure you would like it, and I give it my highest recommendation.

    Have a wonderful time!
PS: Bring your flip-flops to splash around in our ocean – you’ll LOVE it (It will be cold though.)

Figure $30 per day for food.
Souvinirs: Anywhere from $10 to $10,000.
Gas: It’s about $3.00 per gallon here, and distances are far. Figure $50 to fill up a small tank.
