I can’t tell you anything about today’s costs but I know that one the neatest things to do is to go to the other islands close by. As a single guy – and if you have a good, helping attitude, you might be able to just hitch rides on boats as long as you offer to help pay for the gas, etc. There’s not going to be any kind of schedule for these things but there’s also regular (island time kind of regular;-) transportation between islands and you could always hire someone if you had to …but not acting like a typical tourist and getting in with some of the people there and enjoying what they enjoy with them can be a real adventure.
The rule in the Pacific is that’s is always cheaper to make arrangements for things once you’re there. After you get to Fiji, check out boat schedules and take a walk down where the locals dock and see what’s going on. You’ll meet American and other foreign expatriates who can give you good advice.
