Q&A: Do you think it will be safe to go to Phuket, Thailand in June with all of the violence currently in Bangkok?

Question by Jenn: Do you think it will be safe to go to Phuket, Thailand in June with all of the violence currently in Bangkok?
Hi, me and my fiancee were planning on going to Bangkok and Phuket on our honeymoon this June. However, we’ve been reading lots of information about all of the violence going on from the protestors who are mad at the government and now the US has issued at travel alert for all of Thailand untill July 22nd. The alert recommends US citizens to not Travel to anywhere in Thailand unless absolutely necessary.

However, I don’t mind cutting Bangkok out of the iteneray especially since everything that has happend today over there. But, would it be safe to still go to Phuket and maybe Krabi even though the http://www. travel.state.gov says the violence could spread south.

This whole thing sucks because we have just over a month untill our honeymoon, and there is not much time for change of plans.

Also, does anyone have advice from actually being in Thailand right now?

I live in Phuket since years and over here it’s calm and life goes on as usual. I don’t think the riots you spread out over here and if yes only in certain small areas. Just look forwards to your honeymoon.

It is definitely peaceful here in Phuket. I’ve lived here for the past 6 years and have seen my fair share of Thailand’s ups and downs, but the consistency has been that Phuket is safe from the political hoo-hah going on in Bangkok.

Just one small blight is the Phuket airport closure back in Sep 2008, but even that was a blessing because that showed everyone how much it hurt to do something stupid like that so they know better now than to do anything to tourism in Phuket.

There are a lot of direct flights into Phuket so you can definitely give Bangkok a miss. Phuket itself is also enjoying a surge in tourist occupancy as a lot of people are changing their Bangkok stay to Phuket and we have sent off many happy guests.

Phuket will be an excellent place for your honeymoon, so many new villas coming up and June is low season prices, so you can get an excellent bargain staying in one of the gorgeous villas at a low rate.

HI I live in Thailand And the demonstrations are at the most in a small area of Bangkok You will be ok as the airport is 40 kilometres out of Bangkok and you can fly in and straight out to Phuket without leaving the airport Hope this helps .If You need to stay over night there are many hotels near the airport .Good luck and enjoy Thailand

Just moved out of Phuket, Thailand…Bangkok is so far north that the problems there don’t really spread to the south. Krabi especially should be fine as its a very touristy, yet quite place.

I would obviously not recommended flying into Bangkok as you may risk getting held up there if any rioting/trouble occurs. Depends on what part of the world you live in, but if you are American and flying out from there you can easily bypass a stopover in Bangkok by flying into Taipei, Taiwan, which I used to do. (For some reason this was actually cheaper for me than stopping in Bangkok which would be a shorter flight for the airlines, go figure).

Visit Phi Phi if you get time- they have great tourist package deals which include snorkeling, suntanning, and island hopping. If you go down to Chalong Pier in Phuket and ask the guys at the shop about a discounted rate they WILL give it to you-everything in Thailand is negotiable! (Skip the little shops on the road down to the pier- they scam scam scam the tourists!)

    Enjoy your honeymoon!

Hi, I am an American living in Bangkok, in the Silom area, which is right in the middle of all the confrontations right now. First if you already have travel arrangements, then there is not much you can do. The airport is safe. I just flew in from Shanghai a few days ago, the airport was actually very quiet and it was a joy to get out of arrivals with ease. But for you, I would suggest to just transfer at Bangkok and go on to Phuket. I know many people who are using Phuket as an alternative to Bangkok. From what I am told it is safe and there are no problems there. If things do settle down by the time you arrive, you can always tack on a few days in Bangkok at the end of your trip. Contact me if I can be of any more help and enjoy Thailand it is a great place to live and have fun.
