Major Help (Looking for advice and information).?
Question by Kimberly Putnoky: Major Help (Looking for advice and information).?
I’m a senior in highschool (class of 2009), and I haven’t been able to come up with a major that I’m interested in. I want to travel and explore the country/world (preferrably I would like my job to work around that, not just travel for leisure lol). I’m very interested in writing. I like writing poetry and stories. I have a very creative imagination so I think it would work well. I’d like to know if this is a good major to pursue and what kind of jobs can I expect to get from this.
Also, from knowing little about me, if you have any suggestions or thoughts about other majors that you may think I might be interested in, please let me know. I want to know a lot about different majors and stuff. I’d like to get a major now, and focusing on it to make sure it’s something that I want to do.
Thanks in advance!

You won’t have to declare a major in college right away. The first year you will be taking “core” courses required for most majors. Journalism is one major that of course centers around writing. Honestly writing poetry and stories is not something you will easily find a niche in life. It sounds like becoming a travel writer or working for a newspaper would fit you, or news agency. Do you write for your school paper now? Investigate some freelance writing for some locale papers now…it greatly helps to have experience. Major: English/ Journalism….get ahold of some college catalogues now…it will help. Good Luck! (college prof)

This sounds like an English major. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. Do you write? Do you love to write? Do you write poetry and stores yourself now? Have you gotten them published any place at all? Is it really something you have burning passion for or just a whim? You see, if you really loved this you would be writing now even if not published and writing all the time. You would be engaged in this activity. If so, then go to the English dept at the colleges you are interested in going to and bring your writings and set down and talk with them about it. Then ask about careers doing this sort of thing. Ask for the names of graduates of theirs that are doing this kind of job you think you would enjoy. Then seek out those graduates and ask them about their profession. What they like about it and what they don’t like about it. Try to picture yourself as them and see if this is something that excites you. If you don’t think it would, then this isn’t the field for you. If you think this sounds wonderful then give it all you got and go into it.
As for travel, that gets old very fast. Traveling on vacation isn’t the same as having it as a job. You get tired of the airlines, hotels, etc very soon. People constantly travel as part of their job do their best to endure it.
Creative writing could have great potential. You could get into script writing and travel through that. If you like writing scripts enough, you could even go into cinema or filmmaking, making documentaries or narratives, anything, really.
“International Studies” is a pretty popular major but I’m not sure that it’ll let you travel as much as you’d like to. I don’t know, I’m an art student, and that one just sounds like a boring desk job to me.
