My partner and I are planning on going to Vegas next March. On all the travel sites online, you pick the number of people, and it gives you a price for airfare and hotel. Would it be cheaper if we bought one person air and hotel, and the other person just airfare? I realize we probably wouldnt sit together on the plane, but is that a way to go? Also, should we buy now, or much closer to the date we are leaving?

Yes to the first questions. I would wait a little bit longer, there are usually a lot of great deals when flying to Vegas.
Most companies like Orbitz and Travelocity get kickbacks from the casinos for booking people in their hotels so I would check them out first.
Edit: Having worked for the airlines in the past, I can tell you that booking that far in advance you will run the risk of having your flight time changed by as little as 30min or as much as 12 hours. Airlines usually adjust the number of flights and times to their destinations every few months to maximize profits by not having to fly a half empty plane. When you book your flight make sure that you provide a correct phone number so that you can be notified of these changes.
the furthest away from your date of Travel the cheaper the tickets would be. buy the package deals…they are always cheaper then purchasing ticket/hotel separately….unless you are planning on staying in a dive in vegas. And when you book a ticket you have the option (if the plane is still fairly empty) of picking where you want to sit…so it is very possible that you two can be sitting together.
I went to Vegas two years ago and did the package deal threw some online travel place also. I found out after I went on the trip that if I would of gotten it all separate I would of saved several hundreds of dollars. Your cheapest bet would be to start keeping a eye on Southwest airlines they are always running specials from Chicago to Vegas and do the same with the hotels they also run deals often. Buy as soon as you see something that is a good deal the closer you wait you will either run out of time or you won’t be able to get the plane tickets or hotel as cheap.
