yes hitch a lift and share the coast
Unfortunately you didn’t say WHERE in Alaska you were going but judging from the ferry comment it sounds like you are going to SE Alaska.
The cheapest way is to drive. It will take you 3 days to drive from Washington to Skagway (or Haines) assuming you stop every night to sleep. When I did it I slept in campgrounds. I also cooked about 1/2 my food and the rest was cheap fast food. The campgrounds in BC and the Yukon are extremely posh by USA standards and have running water, flush toilets, and even stacked firewood.
Taking a ferry from Haines or Skayway is WAY cheaper than taking it from Bellingham, Washington and its faster to drive.
If you choose to drive get THE book on driving to Alaska. It’s called The Milepost. The drive is unlike any other road trip you’ve ever taken and is a vacation in itself.
