Which is the best way to travel Alaska?

Question by Kate F: Which is the best way to travel Alaska?
My husband and I are planning a trip to Alaska for the end of August. I would like some opinions on which is the bst way to go: rent an RV or rent a car and stay in various hostels along the way? Any information would be very appreciated. Thank you!
We will definitely be flying to Anchorage from Michigan. I’m just wondering what the best way to travel while we’re in Alaska is.
No one has touched on the topic of staying in a hostel…has anyone done this in Alaska and had a good or bad experience? I know a lot of people who have traveled Europe in this manner, but not in the US.

i would recommend a RV because if your husband or you get tired form driving you can get some sleep. or just rent a car it would be a nice experience to travel together and visit various hostels and restaurants. and let me tell you that Alaska is pretty nice.

WIth the price for gas and logging together…you may want to consider flying. If you can afford to drive, an RV would be a great way to see the sights. You can also stay at KOA camp grounds. My family and I drove wayyyyy back in the 70′s. We had a great time. Another suggestion would be to get a “Trip Tic” (I think that’s what they are called…) from AAA and it gives you mileage, towns etc to make driving a bit easier…
    Happy Trails!!

Definitely renting a car…better gas mileage for one. A few years ago my wife and I went to Alaska and found we saw more driving than we would by doing a cruise. We saw Fairbanks, Anchorage, Denali National Park, the Arctic Circle, and Juneau (you’ll go by ferry in and out of the city).

From the seat of a Harley. Hook a sidecar on for your camping supplies.
Who can afford to drive a RV at $5.00 a gallon of gas.Besides you would really experience Alaska on a Harley.

A bit of planning and you could be seeing Alaska in a myriad of means. Primary transportation you’ll probably want a car, and hole up in hotels (or B&B’s) for the night.

Travel North with the Alaska Railroad to Denali and then on to Fairbanks. rent your car in Fairbanks, with a planned drop in Anchorage.

From Fairbanks, head south on the Richardson Highway to Valdez, with a side trip to Chitna and McCarthy. The sights and sounds are amazing. Take a trip across Prince William Sound to Whittier.

From Whittier on down to Homer (Land’s End), for a bit of Halibut fishing. The trip itself is well worth the ride.

Then on back to the big town for the end of the road.

    Camai!

You inquired about Hostels: I am not a big hostel kinda person, as when I am in the bush, I stay literally in the bush; when in town, I like creature comforts.

The last web site listed is a pretty complete list and many are places I know are used quite a bit.

I would choose the RV. During the summer the price for a Hotel will be way over a 100 a night. The savings should cover the extra for gas. Also, I’ve been to some of the hotels outside of Anchorage and Fairbanks, they leave a lot to be desired. Nothing ruins your trip faster than paying a premium price to stay somewhere where you are afraid to take your shoes off or touch the bedding. Plus with the many miles between towns, it would be nice to have the ability to take food and water with you. Some of the best places to see are quite far from any accomodations.
