Question by : Planning a trip to London and Rome when I graduate, where do I start?
I live in Virginia. Is there such thing as a travel package? If so, is it cheaper to travel independently or on a tour? Thanks for the help.

go to a bookstore or library and get Guide books on where you want to go

travel packages depend on what you want and where you want to go
you can go to sites like Expedia or AAA and get an idea of packages and prices in general

travel magazines can also be a big help as well- go to some place like Barnes & Noble or any good bookshop for those

Probably cheaper to do it yourself BUT if you are travelling by yourself it is often more expensive (especially accommodation if you are not willing to share bunk rooms with people).

Planes – heaps of options maybe http://www.expedia.com. London might be a good place to fly to but depending on deals you might find other options. http://www.skyscanner.net is good for flying within Europe (but also has flights all over the world) and you could get a cheap flight from London to Rome

Buses – can be cheaper and you can get some deals at times and if you travel at night you can save on accommodation. http://www.eurolines.com

trains are efficient. some people like the eurorail pass but you have to use it wisely to get the best out of that and if you only want to go to london to rome and back it might be better to just get tickets for those.

Accommodation apart from flight costs will be the next most costly thing. Staying in bunk rooms in hostels is the cheapest. http://www.hostels.com. http://www.hostelworld.com or http://www.hostelbookers.com are all good and you can get an idea of prices. Staying in places centrally may be more expensive but save on transport costs and time wasted getting to and fro (spending 2hrs a day getting into and out of the town center can be a pain, believe me I learned that lesson) but its up to you, if you have the time it might work out cheaper.

Add up the costs and then figure out if its worth doing it yourself or going on a package tour.
