myself and a friend plan on travelling the world, how much will it cost?

Question by : myself and a friend plan on travelling the world, how much will it cost?
we plan on buying a railcard and railing through Europe first, after this we would like to visit places such as Australia, China, America and Hawaii (as many places as possible and as many as we can afford). weve been looking on some other forums and there doesnt seem to be a great deal of help on this matter, as some people say they travelled the world and is cost them £10,000, and others say they travelled the world for 9-10 months and it only cost them £3000. we plan on staying in the cheapest places, eating the cheapest food and drinking the cheapest beer! we both have a budget of around £3500, so can anyone help us out and tell us if this will be suffice for being away from home and around the world for 9-10 months. (WE ALSO PLAN TO WORK ANYWHERE WE CAN)

thanks guys

By your use of the sign £ for your money I assume you are from the UK, if not, the place you can work will be different.
For Europe count on £50 per person per day at least, and while you might be allowed to work, it is rather unlikely that you will find enough jobs to make it useful.
Austalia is likely a bit cheaper and if you can get a working holiday visa you might even find work, but remember that the time you spend working will not be time spend sight seeing, and those that do get a working holiday visa mostly spend a year in Australia, and their time sight seeing is limited to a few weeks. I had seen more of the country in six weeks as tourist than the people who had been working there for a year.
Asia is cheaper but working there is less likely, although I am not sure about the legal options.
In the USA you can not work legally, and with the high unemployment it is unlikely that you will find work while you travel through. Count on £50 per day there if you use motel rooms, £35 if you go for rock bottom low.

Your current £3500 will just buy you your flights, you will need to save at least twice that again for a travel where you can not work to get your money topped up. If you are willing to risk starting to travel without that, make sure you have at least £7000 each, and arrange for a work in France or Italy, or some such place and make sure you have the right registration to work legally before you set out, and make sure you get a working holiday visa for Australia, although illegal work does exist, but it is risky for your health. And when you try to get into the country without money, the immigration officer is allowed to send you back home and they do often enough to worry about that.

Don’t know. But you won’t be able to work in a foreign country – unless you find someone to pay you “under the table” as an undocumented worker.

I’m thinking there are books on “hosteling through Europe”, etc. Have you done an internet search on that topic or something similar?

You want to be careful eating “the cheapest” [usually street] food, as it’s an easy way to get “Montezuma’s revenge”. Might want to talk with your doctor about that and perhaps having cipro available.
