I am going to travel in South America this summer. How do I find the cheapest airfare?
Question by grabermeister: I am going to travel in South America this summer. How do I find the cheapest airfare?
I am interesting in using an South American Air Pass from LAN airlines but to get a good price you need to buy an international ticket with LAN which is very expensive. Any other ideas on how to get cheap air fare. I want to travel to Peru, Argentina, Equador, and Brasil.
I am leaving from Chicago, USA

There is no secret to this except for one.. Find your airfare now and plan out your trip the longer you wait the more the airfare will be. Not sure about the whole intercountry travel pakages but my family travels to ecuador fairly often and you just have to check every airline and think about # of stops layovers etc…

EDITED – since you did provide where you’re starting from.
Any travel passes do require you to tag on an international ticket – cos a pass is just that that flies you within the region! How are you getting there?
We cannot guess… otherwise, it may be easier for you to check out a travel agency in your town who may be able to advise you PROPERLY what your options are.
Your itinerary is too complicated to do it yourself on line especially since you have no idea where it is that you want to go. You named countries… there are MANY cities in each country. Its like someone asking you that how to get from London to USA. Where?
Online travel sites will get you from Chicago to a starting point in say Lima. But from there onwards, you need to know how long in each city, restrictions and flights. Not all passes work with all airlines. And these you cannot book on line.
So save yourself headaches… go talk to a travel agent.
A very good site is kayak.com They basically compile a list of all online travel agencies and then come up with the cheapest airfares. To maximize your savings be sure to book as early as possible and you may want to try flying in the middle of the week Tues-Thurs as these days are normally slightly cheaper than on weekends.
