From where? What are you used to? Have you been there before? “Shoestring” to be may be completely different than you. After airfare and hotel are paid for, biggest chunk of your cost, then it would depend on food, transport and what you plan to do. Taxis are cheap, trikes are cheaper and a bus is even less than that. Street food is cheap but can your stomach handle it? You could probably get by on a day but 0 would be better.

well India isn’t a very costly place….so according to my calculation the basic fare for accomodation would be about Rs10000 per night i.e about $200 so for 7 days you would need $1400…plus lunch dinner would be round about Rs3000-4000per day i.e about $80 per day and hence $560 for about 7days…..so your total cost excluding travel fares and all would be about $1960….
the prices can be far less than my calculations….this is just an average….
    hope it helped…..;)

    Peanuts or half a shoestring.
Coffee in roadside cafes for R5. around 7p. English language newspaper R10 around 14p
Local style hotel £4 -£6 a night but limited facilities, western style from £10 to enormous gold plated luxury at £40 to £200 a night.
Train ride, five hours from Chennai to the south around £5, or £10 first class.
Eat in Class A restuarants for safety. Three course dinner for £5.
Use bottled water for drinking, not tap water.
Alcohol is only served in Permit Rooms. Not all hotels have one.
Book hotels and train tickets locally for local prices or through USA/UK/ European travel agents for the same places and rides at much higher cost.
Tuk-tuk taxis are cheap, hire a driver for the day if you want…haggle for it. Hold tight on busy roads and don’t bother trying to work out which side of the road they drive on……not always that bad but be prepared for a hairy ride.
    Have a great time.
