Q&A: Is there a site online that can tell me the travel times (by train) between cities in Europe?
Question by elwaybeliever: Is there a site online that can tell me the travel times (by train) between cities in Europe?
I am curious to know how long a train ride would be between Paris and Vienna as well as Rome and Vienna. Is there a site where I can find out how long these rides would be? Or does anyone happen to know how long it would take between the cities listed above?

Your best bet would be to pick up a copy of the Thomas Cook European railway timetable… it’s a red and white book and available in the U.S. at most book stores.
I’ve made both of those trips. As I remember, I left Paris about 11AM and arrived in Vienna late in the afternoon… 4 or 5 PM… and it was on a TGE. Rome to Vienna would be an overnight trip or an all day trip… unless there was a railroad employees strike… which happens a lot.
Give your answer to this question below!

Yes, there are a few, but I’ve usually found everything I need on either:
http://www.raileurope.com
or:
http://www.europeanrail.com
They both give you links to most national rail timetables, so you can check them first hand.
Rome-Vienna:
Departures are daily from Roma Termini and arrive at Wien SUED unless noted.
Depart Train Arrive Arrival New Train Depart Arrival
08:55 ES 9464 V-Mestre 13:16 EC 30 13:56 21:44 in Wien Sued
14:55 ES 9472 V-Mestre 19:16 EN 239 20:56 08:30 in Wien West
19:51 EN 234 direct (final stop Wien) 08:42 in Wien Sued
A site that should have links for all info you crave is the Eurail site:
http://www.raileurope.com/us/rail/passes/eurail_index.htm
And it has a train planner too:
http://www.raileurope.com/us/rail/fares_schedules/index.htm
There are as many train journey planners as there are countries in Europe, most do journeys from or to the country, most do not do ones that start and end abroad, even when is goes through the country itself.
Here are a few I use often:
