Q&A: I have pcs orders for air travel, can i drive?

Question by Andrew: I have pcs orders for air travel, can i drive?
I am a marine in c school, and my orders are for air travel, but I have a car and would like to drive, but cannot change my orders to POV because of certain reasons. Basically im asking if that’s allowed?

I have two weeks leave in between, so travel time is not a problem. Im asking if I would get in any kind of trouble for doing it.

Yes. But they will only pay you for mileage up to the amount the plane ticket costs,

So if your mileage was calculated at 0.00 and airfare only cost the government 0.00. All you are going to get s 0.00 for mileage reimbursement.

You could drive, but here;s the problem. You drive to your c school, then from there you are sent overseas. You cannot take your car with you overseas, so what happens to it?

at your cost. you will not re reimbursed per diem or mileage. and they may not allow you to cash in the plane ticket either.

oh and if you are not authorized a POV.. where are you going to park it? you will not necessarily be allwoed to even bring it on base.

You don’t get in trouble for driving instead of flying. You just don’t get reimbursed for any more than the cost of flying. You also only get one day travel time, so you’ll be burning leave to get there.

I am curious what “reasons” would force you to drive.

Other issues might include not being able to get a sticker for the tech school access or other priviledges if you are a student for less than 180 days. If it was me, I’d pay the taxis and not worry about having a POV just yet.

    Yes you can drive.

However they will not pay you per diem, they will not pay you mileage nor any costs associated with you driving vs flying. At most they will pay you the amount of a discount military air fare. The travel time will have to be leave time as they will only give you one travel day if you are suppose to fly.

Just make sure you TELL someone you are driving in case you do not show up when you are suppose to show up.
