It is a Mughal design, designed and constructed n the 17th century as a tomb for Mumtaz the third and favourite wife of Shah Jahan. She was Persian and this is reflected in the design of the gardens. it is therefore a monument to love.
It comprises a central square shrine with onion dome and four minarets at each corner, the whole on a raised plinth set in formal gardens with axial paths and reflecting pools – four irwhans (gates) face each side of the square plan which is generally symmetrical about both axes.
It is constructed of white marble intarsia – that is inset with coloured stones with calligrphy and floral motifs. It’s white form makes it stand out for miles – it has had to be draped in black sheeting at times to prevent being attacked in air raids during the various wars.
